It stems from “AI overhead,” where employees face extra tasks due to AI tools that complicate rather than simplify workflows. Workers report mental exhaustion characterized by difficulty focusing, slower task completion, and feelings of frustration. Despite AI’s promise of increased productivity, its incomplete integration leads to fragmented workflows and increased cognitive load.
The rapid adoption of AI, often without adequate training or workflow redesign, puts pressure on employees to perform dual roles as humans and machine overseers. This results in both emotional stress and decreased productivity. To combat AI burnout, organizations need to embrace a “people-first” approach by streamlining processes around AI, providing role-specific training, and establishing feedback mechanisms.
