Is Unrestricted AI Access Safe for Minors?

Should we allow unregulated AI use by minors?

In recent years, AI systems like ChatGPT and Gemini have integrated into the daily lives of children and adults, assisting with homework, entertainment, and emotional support. However, minors often engage with these technologies without grasping their complexities, leading to potential risks. The Interscholastic Ethics Society (IES), representing students from over 11 international schools in Korea, has petitioned the government to regulate AI use for children under 12. Their proposal includes limiting access, implementing age verification, addressing harmful content, and promoting AI-safety education. Over half of Korean adolescents utilize generative AI, with many blindly trusting its outputs, placing them at risk of misinformation and emotional harm. The U.S. and EU have set restrictions, whereas Korea lacks similar safeguards. Highlighting the need for responsible use of AI, the IES advocates for child safety in a rapidly advancing digital landscape. Their initiative underscores the importance of establishing protective measures to ensure safe AI interactions for minors.
