Numerous Japanese publishers, including Square Enix, Bandai Namco, and Kadokawa, have urged OpenAI to cease utilizing their creative works to train the generative AI model, Sora 2. The Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA), established to promote Japanese content abroad and combat piracy, has issued an open letter highlighting that Sora 2’s outputs resemble a significant amount of Japanese content. CODA asserts that such similarities stem from using Japanese works for machine learning, potentially leading to copyright infringement. Unlike the opt-out system suggested by Sora 2, Japan’s copyright laws generally require prior permission for using copyrighted material. Consequently, CODA demands that its members’ works not be used for machine learning without consent and that OpenAI address copyright concerns raised by member companies. While Nintendo has denied lobbying for AI-related intellectual property protections, it’s noted that companies like Krafton are embracing AI, and Microsoft Gaming is using AI mainly for security purposes.
