JetBrains launches AI agent IDE built on the corpse of abandoned Fleet

JetBrains has introduced Air, a groundbreaking tool for agentic AI development, currently in public preview for macOS users. Head of Product Nik Tkachev emphasizes that Air allows developers to delegate tasks to multiple AI agents operating simultaneously. The tool supports popular AI models such as OpenAI Codex, Anthropic Claude Agent, and Google Gemini CLI, utilizing the Agent Client Protocol (ACP) for versatile agent-editor communication.

Air enables users to describe tasks executed by agents in various environments, including local workspaces and Docker. The JetBrains Junie CLI has also been released, enhancing Junie’s functionality as a standalone tool, with subscription options ranging from $10 to $60 per month. JetBrains is working on incorporating local models while balancing the existing IntelliJ IDEA user base’s needs. With AI’s rapid influence on coding, JetBrains aims to adapt to a fragmented market and validate emerging development concepts, reinforcing its position in the evolving IDE landscape.
