Job Recruiters Face Challenges Finding Qualified Candidates Amid Surge of AI-Generated Applications

Job recruiters struggle to hire qualified people amid flood of AI-written job applications

In the rapidly changing job market, Richard Noel, Eptura’s director of security operations, observes a significant increase in job applications, many powered by AI. Traditionally receiving 100-120 applications per posting, he now faces a surge of up to 360, complicating the candidate selection process. With high unemployment pushing more applicants into the job hunt, recruiters are increasingly discerning about AI-generated résumés, which often appear generic and lack unique personal experiences. Katrina McFadden, chief people officer at Organigram, notes this shift has led to altered interview techniques, focusing on deeper inquiries into candidates’ backgrounds. A Robert Half survey reveals that 79% of hiring managers can identify AI-assisted applications, prompting many candidates to rely on AI to navigate automated screening systems. To stand out, job seekers should emphasize their individual voices and network effectively, as the traditional metrics of hiring are becoming muddied by an overwhelming influx of applications lacking quality.
