Google’s generative AI, Gemini, is rapidly gaining popularity in Korea, now the second-largest paid subscription market for the service. As of January 2023, Korea contributed 11.4% of Gemini’s global revenue on Apple’s App Store, totaling about $21 million, trailing the U.S. at 23.7%. Despite being 17th in downloads, its revenue per download is the highest among major markets, highlighting its profitability. This growth accelerated following the launch of Gemini 3 in November 2022, which introduced enhanced reasoning and multimodal capabilities. Since the launch, Korea’s daily active users (DAUs) surged by 103.7%, the highest among major markets. While OpenAI’s ChatGPT still leads in DAUs, the gap has narrowed after Gemini 3, decreasing from seven times to four times higher for ChatGPT. Notably, the crossover usage between ChatGPT and Gemini increased significantly—showing a growing user base and competition in Korea’s generative AI market.
