South Korea is emerging as a significant player in the global sovereign AI race, with major companies like LG, Naver, SK Telecom, Upstage, and NC AI developing large language models (LLMs) tailored to the Korean language and culture. These models aim to compete with giants like OpenAI and Google, focusing on achieving high performance with fewer parameters. For instance, LG’s Exaone 4.0 has performed admirably in global rankings, while SK Telecom’s A.X models excel in Korean-specific benchmarks. Upstage’s Solar Pro 2 is recognized for its efficiency, and Naver’s HyperClova X leverages extensive Korean datasets. Kakao is also innovating with its Kanana models and partnering with OpenAI. Additionally, NC AI has entered the sector with its Varco models. As the competition intensifies, the Korean government supports these initiatives, underscoring the critical need for national technological independence in AI. This dynamic landscape reflects Korea’s commitment to advancing its AI capabilities.
