Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers has resigned from the board of OpenAI following the release of numerous emails linking him to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. This decision comes just days after Congress unveiled these emails, which detail Summers’s inappropriate communications with Epstein regarding a mentee, raising ethical concerns. Harvard University, where Summers formerly served as president and currently teaches, will conduct its own investigation into his connections to Epstein. Amid this scrutiny, Summers is also scaling back his public commitments. The email exchanges, dating from late 2018 to mid-2019, reveal Summers’s acknowledgment of his power dynamics with the mentee, as he sought advice from Epstein on pursuing a relationship while still being married. Epstein, arrested in 2019 for sex trafficking, was known to use manipulative language when discussing the situation, further complicating Summers’s professional image.
