Bilingual AI Model for English-Welsh Public Services Launched

The UK-LLM initiative is revolutionizing the use of artificial intelligence to preserve regional languages such as Welsh and English while potentially expanding to others like Scottish Gaelic and Irish. Led by University College London and Bangor University in collaboration with Nvidia, this project develops a large language model utilizing Nvidia’s Nemotron architecture. Trained on the Isambard-AI supercomputer, it excels in multilingual reasoning, ensuring non-English speakers receive equitable access to essential public services like healthcare and education.

The initiative leverages advanced techniques like reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) for contextually accurate responses. By addressing linguistic inequities, it enhances the relevance of AI in interpreting regional texts and dialects. This effort not only elevates service delivery but also preserves cultural heritage, improving accessibility for about 900,000 Welsh speakers. As it evolves, the project aims to safeguard linguistic diversity while positioning the UK as a leader in sovereign AI technology.
