AI deepfake nudes; Wisconsin case could test law, ex-officer charged

A former police officer, Kevin Scholz, is facing felony charges in Milwaukee County for allegedly creating a deepfake nude image of his ex-girlfriend using AI technology. Scholz, age 45, reportedly modified a clothing photo of the woman, an elected official who requested anonymity, and sent it to her after their relationship ended in 2022. This incident follows Scholz’s resignation from the Town of Norway Police Department amid misconduct allegations and positions on various autism boards. State prosecutors, led by Assistant District Attorney Erin Karshen, argue that current Wisconsin law prohibiting the “capture” of intimate images should apply to digitally created ones. In response, State Senator André Jacque is advocating for a bill ensuring that synthetic deepfake nudes are treated similarly to real ones, emphasizing protection against dignity violations. While the bill has passed and awaits the governor’s signature, it will not affect Scholz’s current case.
