In the neurological ICU, detecting subclinical seizures and neurological changes is crucial but often limited by the gold standard of continuous EEG monitoring, which faces challenges like logistical bottlenecks and reader shortages. To tackle this, Cleveland Clinic is partnering with Piramidal, an AI startup, to develop a scalable, real-time EEG interpretation model. Led by Dr. Imad Najm, this innovative system aims to transform EEG from a retrospective tool into a proactive clinical assistant, addressing unmet demands in neurocritical care. The AI platform can analyze EEG data in seconds, achieving approximately 90% sensitivity and specificity in seizure detection. The goal is to establish a central EEG monitoring hub, streamlining the review process from two hours to about 10-15 minutes. Ultimately, this initiative is set to revolutionize patient management, enabling timely, objective neurological care and laying the groundwork for a comprehensive ‘AI toolbox’ that integrates various health data for improved outcomes.
