Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta Platforms is aggressively recruiting top AI researchers from Thinking Machines Lab (TML) for its new initiative, Meta Superintelligence Labs. Recent reports indicate that Zuckerberg has successfully lured talent from OpenAI and is now targeting TML, a startup led by ex-OpenAI CTO Mira Murati. Offers to TML employees reportedly range from $200 million to over $1 billion for multi-year contracts. Despite these lucrative proposals, no employees have accepted as of yet. Meta’s communications director, Andy Stone, disputed the report, claiming only a few offers were made. Zuckerberg aims to challenge OpenAI by developing open-source models to democratize AI technology. This recruitment strategy has stirred debates, especially after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman compared it to “mafioso” tactics, yet welcomed the competition. Meta’s ambitious plans signify a significant shift in the AI landscape, contributing to its strong market position reflected in its high Edge Rankings.
