This initiative aligns with Mayo Clinic’s strategic focus on precure—predicting and preventing diseases before they escalate. Childhood asthma affects nearly 6 million U.S. children, leading to significant school absenteeism and hospital visits. The study, published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, analyzed health records of over 22,000 children, pinpointing those at greater risk for issues like pneumonia and influenza. Researchers found strong correlations between high-risk children and family histories of asthma and allergies, alongside signs of impaired lung function. Dr. Young Juhn emphasized the importance of this advancement toward precision medicine in childhood asthma management. The team, supported by a National Institutes of Health grant, aims to further validate these AI tools and improve treatment strategies across diverse populations.
