Researchers at McGill University have created an AI tool named DOLPHIN, which detects elusive disease markers within single cells, as detailed in their study published in Nature Communications. This innovation has the potential to enable early disease detection and personalized treatment strategies. Senior author Jun Ding emphasizes that DOLPHIN can match patients with effective therapies, reducing trial-and-error approaches. Traditional gene analysis methods often obscure critical variations in RNA expression, but DOLPHIN offers a nuanced view by analyzing how genes are spliced together from exons. In tests, it identified over 800 disease markers in pancreatic cancer patients that conventional tools missed, helping differentiate high-risk cases. This advancement is a step towards creating digital models of human cells, allowing for virtual simulations of cellular behavior and treatment responses. The team plans to scale DOLPHIN’s capabilities, enhancing its impact on future medical research. The study was supported by various Canadian research institutions.
