Meta Platforms is increasing the utilization of its internal AI assistant, Metamate, for drafting year-end performance reviews among employees after recently laying off around 600 staff in its AI division. This move emphasizes Meta’s commitment to integrating AI into daily operations and enhancing efficiency. Metamate, similar to commercial chatbots but tailored to Meta’s internal documents, helps compile achievements, deliver structured feedback, and summarize contributions, serving as a personal work archive. Joseph Spisak from Meta’s Superintelligence Lab highlighted its effectiveness in quickly generating evaluation drafts, functioning almost as a running log of work. While the tool is encouraged for performance summaries, final edits remain manual to ensure accuracy. The shift toward AI integration aligns with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s “Year of Efficiency” strategy, aiming to streamline operations while restructuring the company. Affected employees have been provided severance packages. The simultaneous layoffs and AI adoption reflect Meta’s transformation towards a more automated organization.
