Meta has delayed the launch of its AI model, “Avocado,” from March to May 2026 due to performance issues against competitors like Google and OpenAI. Internal tests reveal that “Avocado” struggles in logical reasoning and autonomous task execution, despite surpassing earlier Meta models. In light of this, the company’s leadership is considering licensing Google’s Gemini to bolster its AI offerings. This change signifies a strategic pivot from Meta’s longstanding open-source approach to developing proprietary models under CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s vision for artificial general intelligence (AGI). Notably, internal restructuring has led to significant layoffs and the departure of Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun, who has since founded AMI Labs. Meta plans to introduce additional models like “Mango” and “Watermelon,” hinting at a potential freemium strategy. This shift underscores Meta’s transformation from an open-source innovator to a commercial competitor in the AI landscape.
