Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is ramping up recruitment efforts, notably poaching top AI talent from competitors like Apple. Recently, Meta recruited Ruoming Pang, previously head of Apple’s AI team, to bolster its AI initiatives at the newly established Meta Superintelligence Labs. Bloomberg reports that Meta’s aggressive hiring strategy has dealt Apple a significant setback, as Pang was known for managing a team of 100 and developing essential functionalities for Apple devices, such as email summaries and smart notifications.
Zuckerberg has taken a hands-on approach, personally engaging potential hires and offering compensation packages reaching “tens of millions of dollars” annually to secure top talent like Pang. This move highlights the escalating competition for AI expertise in the tech sector. Pang’s exit may also affect Apple’s AI division, where his team is under scrutiny as new leaders consider third-party model integrations. With Pang’s departure, morale within Apple’s AI division appears to have declined, prompting further staff exits.
