Microsoft Acquires Crusoe’s New 900 MW DC Campus • The Register

Crusoe, a Bitcoin farmer turned data center builder, announced plans to expand its Abilene, Texas campus by 900 megawatts, supporting Microsoft’s AI initiatives. This new expansion will complement a 1.2 gigawatt facility being constructed for Oracle and OpenAI as part of the $500 billion Stargate initiative. Originally, Oracle and OpenAI intended to lease this capacity, but negotiations fell through, paving the way for Microsoft’s involvement. The campus will include two data halls and an on-site power plant capable of delivering the additional 900 MW, enhancing America’s industrial AI infrastructure, according to CEO Chase Lochmiller. While the site’s total capacity will reach 2.1 gigawatts, only 200 megawatts from the existing project are operational, with the remainder expected online by 2026. Current efforts focus on land-clearing and site preparation, with operations anticipated to begin mid-next year. Potential power sources for the facilities include natural gas generators or fuel cells.
