Microsoft is pursuing AI self-sufficiency by developing its own advanced models, such as MAI-1-preview, and expanding its AI supplier network. Microsoft’s AI chief, Mustafa Suleyman, emphasized the company’s intent to achieve “true AI self-sufficiency,” indicating a shift away from reliance on OpenAI. The MAI-1-preview model, pre-trained on 15,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, will be integrated into various Copilot applications. Microsoft is also incorporating AI solutions from competitors like xAI, Meta, Mistral, and Black Forest Labs. The recent partnership adjustments provide Microsoft expanded IP rights and autonomy to explore AGI independently. Investor concerns about this dependency were highlighted during earnings calls, contributing to a significant drop in Microsoft’s stock value. Suleyman anticipates the launch of Microsoft’s superintelligence model within the year, reaffirming the company’s ambitious trajectory in AI development.
