Microsoft announced a partnership with AI firm Anthropic and chipmaker Nvidia, marking a shift from its long-standing relationship with OpenAI. Anthropic will procure $30 billion in computing power from Microsoft’s Azure cloud. Nvidia is set to invest up to $10 billion in Anthropic, while Microsoft will contribute up to $5 billion. This collaboration, highlighted during Microsoft’s Ignite conference, emphasizes delivering superior infrastructure and AI models to clients. Anthropic, which developed the Claude chatbot to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT, will be the only frontier AI model available through major cloud platforms, including those operated by Amazon and Google. Despite their collaboration, OpenAI has been pursuing its own cloud initiatives with Oracle and SoftBank. Both Anthropic and OpenAI face challenges in achieving profitability, as AI models like Claude and ChatGPT demand immense computing resources. This move showcases Microsoft’s evolving AI strategy and commitment to enhancing its cloud offerings.
