Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently announced the deployment of the company’s first massive AI system, referred to as an AI “factory,” utilizing Nvidia technology. These systems will be integrated across Microsoft Azure’s global data centers to support OpenAI workloads. Each system features over 4,600 Nvidia GB300 rack computers equipped with the highly sought-after Blackwell Ultra GPU chip, linked through Nvidia’s advanced InfiniBand networking technology. Microsoft plans to deploy “hundreds of thousands” of these powerful GPUs globally, enhancing their capabilities for handling frontier AI demands. The announcement follows OpenAI’s recent deals with Nvidia and AMD, aligning Microsoft strategically as they currently operate over 300 data centers across 34 countries. This initiative positions Microsoft to manage extensive AI workloads, including next-gen models with trillions of parameters. Upcoming insights on Microsoft’s AI strategy will be shared by CTO Kevin Scott at TechCrunch Disrupt from October 27 to 29 in San Francisco.
