New Franklin technology director Jackie Starke looks at the Bark dashboard. Advocates say the tools are part of the solution for suicide prevention. But experts warn more is needed to address youth mental health concerns.

In Neosho, Missouri, school counselor Tracy Clements witnessed rising student suicides and sought solutions, ultimately founding a mental health task force. Initially skeptical of AI’s role in mental health, her perspective shifted after an incident where an AI tool flagged a student at risk, prompting immediate intervention. In 2020, the Neosho School District adopted GoGuardian Beacon, a student surveillance software focusing on mental health, which alerts administrators to potential crises. The tool has reportedly helped decrease student suicides to zero over four years, amidst rising concerns about privacy and its impact on vulnerable groups, such as LGBTQ+ and disabled students. While some parents express a desire for oversight, experts stress the need for comprehensive mental health resources beyond technology. As Missouri faces significant youth mental health challenges, holistic approaches that encompass community and school involvement are deemed essential for sustainable support and prevention strategies.
