Microsoft’s AI chief, Mustafa Suleyman, recently declared the company’s aim for “true AI self-sufficiency,” marking a strategic pivot away from reliance on OpenAI. Joined by Suleyman in March 2024, Microsoft is accelerating its development of in-house AI models intended for “superintelligence.” His past experience, as a co-founder of Google DeepMind, bolsters his vision for Microsoft AI, which includes products like Copilot and Bing. Recent changes in Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI, transitioning profits into a significant ownership stake, reinforce its independence to pursue artificial general intelligence (AGI). This shift is fueled by investor concerns, as OpenAI accounts for a large portion of Microsoft’s sales backlog, recently causing a $357 billion drop in market value. Suleyman’s focus on creating AI responsibly includes assembling a specialized team dedicated to safety and human oversight, complemented by a projected $140 billion investment in AI infrastructure this fiscal year.
