Technostress and AI: Understanding the Impact on Quality of Life

In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping industries, sparking debates on its implications. One significant concern is technostress, defined as the anxiety stemming from feelings of obsolescence and decreased job security due to AI. A study by Litan (2025) examined this phenomenon among 217 Romanian adults, identifying five key stressors: techno-overload, techno-invasion, techno-complexity, techno-insecurity, and techno-uncertainty. The findings suggest that while AI doesn’t directly reduce quality of life, emotional responses to AI impact overall well-being. Positive emotions can mitigate stress, while negative feelings exacerbate it.

To combat technostress, increasing digital literacy and emotional regulation skills is crucial. Individuals should reflect on their emotional experiences with AI, promoting positive attitudes and social connections. Practitioners can help clients navigate these challenges by emphasizing emotional awareness and providing resources for skill development, facilitating healthier adaptation in an AI-driven world.
