The Indian government is rolling out over 18,000 GPUs, including around 13,000 H100 chips, to select startups like Sarvam, Soket Labs, Gnani AI, and Gan AI. This initiative aims to establish a national multilingual dataset repository, create AI labs in smaller cities, and support deep-tech research and development, ultimately fostering a competitive AI landscape grounded in India’s and the Global South’s cultural realities. The effort anticipates about $12 billion in R&D investment over five years, with $162 million from the IndiaAI Mission and $730 million from the National Quantum Mission. A $1.2 billion Deep Tech Fund aims to promote early-stage innovation. Thus far, IndiaAI has received over 500 startup applications across various sectors. However, the program faces criticism for supporting closed models like Sarvam, raising concerns about the need for transparency and openness in AI development.
