In a groundbreaking advancement in early detection of neurodegenerative diseases, researchers from the Mayo Clinic have developed StateViewer, an artificial intelligence (AI) tool that accurately identifies brain activity patterns linked to nine types of dementia with just one fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) scan. This tool achieved an 88% accuracy rate in diagnosing dementia types, including Alzheimer’s disease, and significantly sped up interpretation time—resulting in nearly twice the speed and three times the accuracy compared to traditional methods. This innovation aims to simplify the complex diagnostic process, which often includes cognitive tests and blood draws. With dementia affecting over 55 million people worldwide, and Alzheimer’s being a leading cause of death, tools like StateViewer represent crucial steps toward earlier understanding, precise treatments, and potential changes in disease progression.
