The Lok Sabha will introduce a new seat-based attendance system during the upcoming Budget session, requiring MPs to register their presence at their designated seats rather than in crowded lobbies. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla explained that this change aims to streamline attendance recording and ensure that members remain engaged in House proceedings. The new system allows MPs to mark attendance through multimedia devices at their seats using smart ID cards, thumbprints, or personal identification numbers (PINs). This initiative supports a paperless Parliament, transitioning from the previous digital pen method in the lobby. Attendance will be crucial for MPs to receive daily allowances during sessions, and while Ministers and the opposition leader are exempt, the frequency of attendance remains a public focus. Additionally, the Lok Sabha is exploring AI technologies for real-time legislative translation, achieving 80% accuracy, with the goal of streamlined uploads within 30 minutes by April.
