In this episode of The New Stack Agents, Scott Carey, editor-in-chief of LeadDev, discussed their first AI Impact Report, which reveals insights about how developers are utilizing AI tools in software engineering. The report indicates that 66% of developers are using AI, with 20% in the proof-of-concept stage. Notably, only 2% of respondents have no plans to adopt AI. Popular tools include Cursor (43%) and GitHub Copilot (37%). While many developers consider AI to enhance productivity, a METR report revealed a paradox: AI tools may slow them down by 19%. Regarding the future of employment, 54% believe AI will lead to fewer junior developer hires as roles shift towards supervisory tasks. The report suggests that significant AI integration in areas like DevOps is still evolving, highlighting a gap in assessing productivity and its impact on development processes.
