Research from the Manchester Institute of Education highlights the responsible integration of AI tools in teacher training, focusing on the generative AI application TeachMateAI (TMAI) within the University of Manchester’s PGCE program. Initial findings from the first year of a three-year study reveal that trainee teachers utilized AI critically and creatively, contrary to fears about over-reliance. Instead of detracting from professional judgment, AI enhanced resourcefulness and contextual awareness when combined with robust guidance and reflective practices. As AI plays an increasingly significant role in students’ lives, preparing future educators to navigate its implications in education is crucial. Trainees primarily used AI for generating lesson materials while demonstrating exceptional contextual judgment by adapting content to meet their pupils’ needs, thereby extending their creative capabilities rather than replacing them.
