New Research Reveals How AI Can Enhance Breast Cancer Screening Accuracy

AI could help us more accurately screen for breast cancer – new research

Breast cancer affects over 20,000 Australian women annually, with 3,300 fatalities. Early detection through breast screening, particularly mammograms, is crucial, halving mortality risks. However, more than half of eligible women participate, and 25% of diagnosed cases are aggressive “interval cancers.” A recent study in The Lancet Digital Health highlights the promise of artificial intelligence (AI) in enhancing breast cancer screening. Using the AI tool BRAIx, researchers analyzed data from nearly 96,000 Australian women, successfully predicting future breast cancer risks post-clear mammograms. The study suggests that BRAIx could identify women who may benefit from additional tests, such as MRIs or contrast-enhanced mammograms. While the findings encourage integrating AI into screening programs, there are limitations, such as differences between BRAIx and genetic testing methodologies. With ongoing trials in BreastScreen Victoria and evaluations in other states, a national review of these AI tools could pave the way for a more effective, risk-adjusted breast screening approach, potentially saving lives.
