Nine Publishers File Lawsuit Against OpenAI and Microsoft Over Alleged Copyright Infringements – November 28, 2025

A coalition of nine newspapers, including California Newspapers Partnership, Hartford Courant Company, and Los Angeles Daily News, has filed a $10 billion lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft. They allege copyright violations related to the use of their content for training large language models. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, argues that the AI-generated outputs fail to include proper citations or links back to the original publishers, misleading users into thinking the material originates from the AI itself. The complaint claims that OpenAI and Microsoft have “memorized” these works, with hundreds of thousands of articles being used to enhance their models continually. This action joins a growing trend of legal challenges by publishers against AI companies, and many of these cases are currently consolidated in this court, having survived initial dismissal attempts.
