Northumbria to roll out new AI platform for staff and students

Northumbria University is set to enhance its educational offerings by providing students and staff with free access to Claude for Education, an advanced AI platform developed by Anthropic, making it the second UK university to do so. This initiative aims to equip the university community with essential skills for success in the evolving AI-driven landscape. Claude for Education fosters ethical and secure AI usage, promoting critical thinking over direct answers, and acts as a 24/7 study partner. Northumbria, recognized for its leadership in responsible AI research, recently launched the Centre for Responsible AI and is involved in a UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training. Professor Graham Wynn emphasizes the importance of accessible AI tools for digitally native students, addressing digital poverty and ensuring equity in education. The rollout of Claude for Education is scheduled for autumn 2025, reflecting Northumbria’s commitment to ethical AI innovation and empowering its community with essential AI literacy for future workplaces.
