Founder of British start-up Nothing says apps will disappear

Executive Carl Pei, co-founder of the British startup Nothing, predicts a significant shift away from traditional mobile apps. Speaking at SXSW, he stated, “apps are going to disappear,” emphasizing that startups relying solely on apps will face disruption. Pei envisions Artificial Intelligence (AI) agents taking over tasks, eliminating the need to navigate multiple applications. He criticized the outdated mobile interaction model, which hasn’t changed much since the iPhone’s debut, calling it “boring.” Instead of juggling apps for various tasks, Pei believes users will soon instruct AI agents to manage operations seamlessly. He advises app developers to leverage APIs for efficient integration, paving the way for future-proof systems. While he anticipates smartphones will still exist in five years, he envisions a transformed operating system and the emergence of new devices. The transition from apps to AI-driven solutions is expected to unfold over the next seven to ten years, as users remain attached to current applications.
