The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded $15 million to renew support for the Molecule Maker Lab Institute (MMLI) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. This five-year grant aims to enhance the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the rapid discovery and synthesis of functional molecules essential for medicine, energy, and industry. Directed by Huimin Zhao, the NSF MMLI integrates advanced AI tools with automated systems to streamline molecule production, making it accessible to non-experts. Since its inception in 2020, MMLI has generated significant advancements, leading to 166 publications, 11 patents, and two startups. Key innovations include AlphaSynthesis, an AI platform for chemical synthesis, and closed-loop automation systems.
