Nvidia plans to invest $100 billion in OpenAI to develop new data centers and AI infrastructure, as revealed in a joint statement on September 22. They have signed a letter of intent and are finalizing the details for this partnership, which aims to create data centers with a combined power capacity of 10 gigawatts—enough to power over 8 million homes annually. OpenAI will incorporate Nvidia’s cutting-edge chips to enhance AI model training and operation. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized that computational infrastructure is vital for future economic growth. Initial investments will begin with $10 billion once the agreement is finalized, with subsequent funding tied to additional gigawatt capacity. Nvidia will also acquire equity in OpenAI and become its preferred supplier for chips. The first phase of this project is projected to complete by late 2026. This investment follows Nvidia’s recent $5 billion investment in Intel to integrate its technology into AI platforms.
