Critics, including Technology Committee Chair Carmen De La Rosa, highlighted a consistent lack of transparency from the Office of Technology and Innovation, tracing back to former Mayor Eric Adams. They also expressed concern over the implications of using technologies like facial recognition, which may exacerbate existing racial biases. The council plans to request more detailed information on the use of these technologies across city agencies, emphasizing the need for accountability and clearer policies regarding biometric data and AI’s role in public safety and civil rights.
