Itai Tech Ltd, operator of a “nudification” site, has been fined £50,000 by Ofcom for failing to implement required age verification measures under online safety laws. The regulator found that the company, which offers AI tools for nudity removal, did not respond to information requests, resulting in an additional fine of £5,000. Recently, the site became inaccessible from UK IP addresses, coinciding with the investigation that began in May. Ofcom emphasized the necessity of “highly effective age assurance” to shield children from harmful content, asserting that non-compliance would lead to significant fines and enforcement action. This marks Ofcom’s second penalty under the Online Safety Act, following a similar fine to 4chan. Additionally, the regulator is investigating 76 other platforms for potential breaches. There are also discussions about banning “nudifying” apps to combat deepfake intimate image abuse. Companies must adopt robust age verification by law to prevent underage access.
