OpenAI Ramps Up Data Center Development Plans Even More

OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, is set to invest tens of billions in a deal with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to acquire 6 gigawatts (GW) of AI-focused chips. This partnership, which includes an option for OpenAI to purchase approximately 10% of AMD, aims to enhance OpenAI’s data center capabilities essential for artificial intelligence development. Just weeks prior, Nvidia announced a $100 billion investment in OpenAI to support new data center initiatives targeting over 10 GW of AI computing capacity. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized that this collaboration with AMD will significantly accelerate the company’s growth in compute power. Initial AMD processors are expected to be operational by the second half of next year. With the AI demand driving a projected $7 trillion in data center investment by 2030, OpenAI is also establishing five new AI data center campuses nationwide, in collaboration with Oracle and SoftBank.
