OpenAI eases pressure on staff as Meta headhunts key personnel

OpenAI is re-evaluating its compensation structure following the departure of key researchers to Meta, which has intensified competition for AI talent in Silicon Valley. In an internal Slack memo, Mark Chen, head of research at OpenAI, expressed concern over the resignations, likening them to a personal attack and emphasizing the company’s commitment to retaining its workforce. Following the recruitment of four OpenAI researchers by Meta for their superintelligence lab, Chen confirmed ongoing discussions with employees regarding their offers from external firms. Despite reviewing compensation, he stressed the importance of equal treatment among staff. Meta’s aggressive recruitment tactics, including signing bonuses up to $100 million, have raised tensions. OpenAI staff report high workloads, sometimes reaching 80 hours a week, prompting the company to temporarily close next week for some relief. Chen called for a focus on long-term goals like artificial general intelligence amidst external pressures. Altman praised Chen’s leadership during this challenging period.
