OpenAI has announced a partnership with Instacart to introduce a comprehensive grocery shopping app within ChatGPT, marking the first integration of full shopping functionalities, including item browsing, cart building, and Instant Checkout, within a chat interface. This feature allows users to complete grocery purchases without switching tabs, streamlining the shopping experience. Currently available on desktop and mobile, it will soon extend to iOS and Android. By initiating prompts with “Instacart,” users can easily sign in and receive product suggestions from nearby retailers. The payment process is facilitated by Stripe, ensuring secure transactions. OpenAI’s expansion into agentic commerce follows previous integrations with Shopify and Etsy, allowing users to find, compare, and purchase products efficiently. As competition grows in the AI shopping space, with Google and Perplexity developing similar tools, OpenAI seeks to position ChatGPT as the go-to platform for seamless online retail experiences.
