OpenAI is developing its first AI hardware device in collaboration with designer Jony Ive, though details remain limited. According to recent court filings during a trademark dispute with a Google-backed startup named iyO, the device will not be a wearable or in-ear gadget and is unlikely to launch before 2026. OpenAI’s Chief Hardware Officer Tang Tan noted the product’s design is still evolving and aims to fit in a pocket or sit on a desk. Speculation suggests it may resemble a smart home device, perhaps akin to an Amazon Echo Dot, relying on built-in cameras and microphones. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts it will be compact, lacking a screen, and will connect to smartphones and computers for processing. The device’s design represents a shift away from conventional screen-based gadgets, and it has elicited strong positive reactions from investors, including Laurene Powell Jobs. Legal challenges have temporarily hampered promotional efforts surrounding the project.
