OpenAI has partnered with NextDC as the first major customer of a new $7 billion hyperscale AI data center in Eastern Creek, Western Sydney. This collaboration, part of OpenAI’s expansion into Australia, aims to bolster local computational power amid rising investments from Amazon and Microsoft. The facility will feature a “large-scale GPU supercluster” and is designed to support AI workloads without the need for potable water due to advanced cooling technology. Scheduled to open in late 2027, it is anticipated to create thousands of jobs and is aligned with Australia’s National AI Plan. OpenAI’s initiatives include AI training partnerships with major firms like Commonwealth Bank, Coles, and Wesfarmers, aimed at enhancing workforce skills. With projections indicating a potential GDP boost of $142 billion by 2030 from AI adoption, this initiative represents a significant opportunity for Australia’s tech sector.
