OpenAI and Oracle reportedly abandon TX Stargate expansion • The Register

OpenAI and Oracle have reportedly halted their plan to expand the Stargate datacenter in Abilene, Texas, due to financing issues and leadership concerns from Sam Altman. Initially, the expansion aimed to boost capacity from 1.2 gigawatts to 2 gigawatts. Sources suggest that OpenAI’s struggle to accurately forecast demand played a role in this decision. Meanwhile, Meta is in discussions to lease the unutilized capacity, facilitated by Nvidia’s $150 million deposit on future expansions. Despite the setback for OpenAI and Oracle, their partnership remains robust, focusing on a separate contract valuing $300 billion, which aims to deliver 4.5 gigawatts for model development. Yet, the need for significant debt financing is evident, with Oracle planning to raise an additional $50 billion. As Meta seeks to enhance its datacenter capabilities, the top hyperscalers are projected to spend $710 billion collectively by 2026 on infrastructure, signaling ongoing demand in the tech sector.
