OpenAI, Oracle, and Related Digital are set to construct a massive data center campus exceeding 1 gigawatt (GW) in Saline Township, Michigan, as part of their Stargate initiative aimed at bolstering US artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. Announced on Thursday, this multibillion-dollar venture underscores the growing demand for computing power critical for advancing AI technology. With 1GW capable of powering approximately 750,000 US homes, the project reflects an estimated investment of around US$50 billion, although exact figures remain undisclosed. Construction is expected to start in early 2026. This project contributes to Oracle and OpenAI’s broader 4.5-GW Stargate expansion, which, alongside six additional sites, will elevate the overall infrastructure capacity to over 8GW and planned investments exceeding US$450 billion over the next three years. OpenAI has confirmed that this initiative is ahead of schedule in meeting its US$500 billion, 10GW commitment, although funding details remain scarce.
