OpenAI and Oracle have halted plans to expand their significant AI data center in Abilene, Texas, amid financing challenges and shifting infrastructure needs. Originally, the expansion aimed to increase capacity from 1.2 gigawatts to 2 gigawatts, integral to the ambitious Stargate initiative—a joint venture with SoftBank to establish AI infrastructure. Instead, Meta Platforms may lease the newly available capacity. Despite the setback, construction at the existing site continues, which spans approximately 1,000 acres. NVIDIA also played a role by ensuring that its AI chips power the facility. Meanwhile, Meta is concurrently expanding its AI capabilities with a deal to use AMD Instinct AI chips. Although OpenAI and Oracle have shifted focus, they continue to pursue new data center capacity, with plans for an additional 4.5 gigawatts of infrastructure still on track. This situation highlights the rapidly evolving demand for AI computing power among leading tech firms.
