OpenAI and Oracle Halt Abilene AI Data Center Expansion Amid Stargate Challenges | Ukraine news

OpenAI and Oracle have halted plans to expand their AI data center in Abilene, Texas, which was part of the Stargate project. Initially aimed at increasing capacity from 1.2 GW to 2 GW, talks fell through due to local regulatory resistance and financing challenges. Despite this setback, the existing data center, spanning over 370,000 square meters, remains operational with ongoing developments.

NVIDIA servers essential for OpenAI’s AI model operations are being deployed by Oracle, although tensions with contractor Crusoe persist, particularly after severe winter weather damaged cooling systems. NVIDIA provided a $150 million deposit to stabilize operations and facilitate potential leasing to Meta.

While local communities express concerns over reliance on coal or gas power, the demand for AI data centers is projected to grow, highlighting the need for responsible resource management. The Stargate initiative continues to reflect the evolving landscape of tech infrastructure, paving the way for new opportunities amid regulatory hurdles.
