OpenAI and SoftBank Group have invested a combined $1 billion in SB Energy, a US digital infrastructure firm, to expand AI data centers. Each company contributes $500 million, with SB Energy, backed by SoftBank and Ares Management, set to build a 1.2-gigawatt facility in Texas. SB Energy is also developing multi-gigawatt campuses, with initial operations expected to launch this year. A strategic partnership has been formed to innovate data center construction, blending OpenAI’s design with SB Energy’s efficiency and energy solutions. This investment aligns with the $500 billion Stargate initiative, aimed at enhancing AI and energy infrastructure in the US, previously announced with partners like Oracle. OpenAI’s push into data centers aims to strengthen its competitive edge against industry leaders like Meta, Microsoft, and Google. Additionally, Nvidia plans a $100 billion investment in OpenAI to support future AI model development, signaling a robust commitment to advancing AI capabilities.
