OpenAI and SoftBank Group Corp. have announced a significant joint investment of $1 billion in SB Energy, each contributing $500 million to support the construction of large-scale data centers for artificial intelligence (AI) in the U.S. This partnership focuses on a new facility in Milam County, Texas, with a capacity of 1.2 GW—enough to power about 750,000 households. The project, part of the larger $500 billion Stargate initiative involving OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle, aims to establish vital AI infrastructure over four years. Additionally, SB Energy, transitioning from renewable energy to data center operations, has secured $800 million from Ares Infrastructure Opportunities funds. OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman emphasized the collaboration’s potential to optimize computing through advanced data centers. Moreover, SB Energy will integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT and API into its workflows, with operations expected to commence by 2026, highlighting the strategic importance of stable energy sources in the competitive tech landscape.
