South Korea is taking significant steps to bolster its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, highlighted by a recent meeting between President Lee Jae Myung and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The discussions, which also involved Samsung and SK Group leaders, resulted in tentative agreements to establish two new 20-megawatt data centers in remote regions of South Korea to meet rising AI demands. The collaboration aims to position South Korea as an AI hub in the Asia-Pacific, leveraging OpenAI’s expertise and local tech giants’ resources. The nonbinding agreement signed by the Science Ministry and OpenAI also emphasizes enhancing the AI ecosystem, fostering startups, and expanding technology use in the public sector. This initiative aligns with the Lee administration’s vision to create an “AI expressway,” supporting nationwide infrastructure and positioning South Korea among the world’s top three AI powerhouses, alongside ongoing talks with other tech giants like Google.
