OpenAI anticipates that by 2030, around 220 million of ChatGPT’s weekly users will convert to paid subscriptions, representing 8.5% of an estimated 2.6 billion users. Currently, about 35 million, or 5%, subscribe to the “Plus” or “Pro” plans. This shift positions ChatGPT to potentially become one of the largest subscription services globally. Despite widening losses, OpenAI’s projected annual revenue run rate could hit USD 20 billion by year-end. In the first half of 2025, revenue reportedly rose to USD 4.3 billion, a 16% increase compared to 2024, while the company faced USD 2.5 billion in expenses primarily due to R&D. Looking ahead, OpenAI expects 20% of future revenue from new products, including shopping and advertising features. Recently, it launched a personal shopping assistant for ChatGPT, opening avenues for monetization through ads or commission-based sales, highlighting growth opportunities in the subscription and e-commerce landscape.
